After topping the first session, Luca Engstler clocked the fastest lap again in the second Free Practice. However, Giacomo Altoè improved from third to second and reduced the gap from his rival to two tenths only.
On his second session at the wheel of the Audi RS3 LMS, Danny Kroes proved that is getting to know it and posted a provisional fastest lap of 1:46.454 that eventually placed him fourth in the timesheet.
Engstler set the session’s fastest lap of 1:46.073; this was significantly slower that his FP1’s time, which was the case for nearly all the drivers as the track surface was hotter.
Just before the end, Giacomo Altoè moved up to second fastest with a lap of 1:46.268 and demoted Kai Jordan to third 1:46.303. The German was the only one who was able to improved his lap time compared to the previous session.
The gaps between the drivers were very small – one/two tenths – despite the length of the International Circuit.
Jordan: “We have changed the set up after Practice 1 and it was better. I will be aiming for a good Qualifying results, between third and fifth I hope.”
Kroes: “We have solved the problems we had in the first session. I have spent the second practice to know the track better and get used to the car. Now I’m looking forward to the Qualifying!”
Thoma: “I had a gearbox problem, but it has been solved and I’m ready for the Qualifying.”
Oriola: “My tyres were completely finished and one of them was even flat. I hope it goes better with new tyres, but it’s not easy, because you only have one good lap with them.”
Veglia: “I’m happy with my pace, considering that I have only used the same tyres from the Abu Dhabi races. In fact, I had to stop before the end of the session because one of the tyres had worn off. Now let’s see how it goes with the new tyres.”
Papantonis: “I’m a bit upset. Instead of making progress it’s going worse. I was happy with the performance in Abu Dhabi, but this is my home racetrack and I expected to be better. We need to change something for Qualifying.”
The Qualifying will start at 15:45 local time.
